Speaking skill is an essential aspect of learning English. One of the successes in speaking is measured by the ability to communicate effectively. It is crucial to speak fluently inside and outside the classroom. Various factors influence the success of the practice of speaking English. One of them is psychological factors. Psychological factors that affect speaking do not only occur in beginners but also in university students who usually deal with English. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher decided to uncover the psychological factors that negatively affect students' speaking performance in English Education Department at UINSI Samarinda and the possible solutions to reduce the factors.
This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was TBI 3 in the fourth semester. The data were collected using questionnaire, observation, and interview, and then analyzed using the Interactive Model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The data were validated using source and technical triangulation.
Based on the result, the researcher found that the psychological factors that negatively affect students' speaking performance in the English Education Department at UINSI Samarinda are anxiety, shyness, and lack of self-confidence. Even students who have a strong motivation to be able to speak English still experience the factors. There are some possible solutions to reduce the psychological factors that negatively affect students' speaking performance, namely: to reduce anxiety are preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, and peer seeking, to reduce shyness are a pleasant classroom atmosphere, often participating in group activities, and embracing a positive mindset, to reduce the lack of self-confidence can be applied various learning methods in the classroom.
