This thesis was conducted based on the research problem that still many students at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 36 Samarinda who had problems in speaking. Based on the preliminary study at the third grade of SMP Negeri 36 Samarinda, there were many students that still do not understanding the information how to speak. From 54 students, there were 51% or 28 students got score under 75 and there were 49% or 26 students got score above 75 criteria for minimum completion. In responding to the result of the preliminary study, the researcher observed the teaching and learning process of speaking on digital storytelling to identify some factors related the problem above. The problems are most of the students had difficulties about what they will speak, although they know the topic that given by the teacher.
The researcher used quasi experimental design that focuses on activities in the classroom. Subjects examined were 54 respondents from students of the third grade. The researcher instrument used by the researcher are (1) pre-test (2) treatment (3) post- test and (documentation). The purpose of this research was to know the effectiveness of digital storytelling to improve speaking skill on third grade of junior high school (SMP Negeri 36) Samarinda in academic year 2019/2020. In this research, the researcher used digital storytelling as a media of learning English speaking to find out whether the technique can improve speaking skill at the third grade of Junior High School (SMP Negeri 36) Samarinda in academic year 2019/2020.
Based on the result of post-test, the highest score of experimental class was 88 and the highest score of post-test control class was 80. The experimental class post-test score was higher than the control class. The result analysis that tvalue is 3,155 and ttable is 1,674. It means that tvalue is highest than ttable (tvalue > ttable), Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that using digital storytelling to improve students’ speaking skill is effective.
