Thesis, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Tarbiyah Faculty, Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Islamic University of Samarinda. This research is under the guidance of Mr Dr. Umar Fauzan, M.pd. as the first advisor and Mrs Dra. Sitti Hadijah, M.Pd as the second advisor.
Reading comprehension is a complex interaction between automatic and strategic Cognitive processes that allows the reader to create a mental representation of the text. Through reading the students can get many knowledge, experience and information about anything such as education, business and others. However reading is not easy for the students in MAN 1 Samarinda because based on the researcher’s observation in that school, the researcher find some of students still difficulties in reading comprehension. The objectives of the research were to know the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension skill and to know dominant students’ difficulties in reading comprehension skill of the tenth-grade students in MAN 1 Samarinda.
The data was analyzed by using descriptive quantitative method, the instrument of the research were observation and interview. To collect the data the researcher use observation and interview through hand-Phone. The subject of the researcher was taken from one class which were consisted of thirty students and from the one the researcher only took ten students and one English teacher as the subject of this research. Then the researcher make fifteen questions to interview them, namely ten questions for interview students and five questions for interviewEnglish teacher. The researcher analyzed the data using Dharman and Arikunto’s theory.
There were two findings in this research. The first is students felt difficulties in reading comprehension skill because they were lack of vocabulary and felt bored. Many students cannot understand about reading because they lack of knowledge in English such as vocabulary. Vocabulary is the important factor in English because to improve our knowledge skill in English we have to memories about many vocabulary. The second is dominant students’ difficulties in reading comprehension skill was vocabulary too. That means there are many students felt difficulties about reading comprehension because they lack of vocabulary mastery. Vocabulary is the main factor to make students in MAN 1 Samarinda felt difficulties in reading comprehension.
