Based on the background of this research, writing is one of the difficult skills for all language users whether the language is the first, second, or foreign language. In English, students are expected to understand grammar well. As we know that grammar is the most important part of studying English; because the students learn about how to construct the writing and utterance correctly. In the English Education at IAIN Samarinda, the students often make mistakes in writing and lack grammatical structure. The purpose of this research is to describe the types of grammatical errors and to find out which type of errors in terms of surface strategy taxonomy that is committed most frequently in the students’ essay writing in the fourth semester of English Education at IAIN Samarinda in Academic Year 2019/2020
The method that has used by the researcher during the research was descriptive qualitative. The researcher conducted the research used two instruments. The first instrument was the researcher as the main instrument to collect the data. The second, the researcher used students’ essay writing worksheets as an instrument to collect the data. The subject in this research was 10 students from TBI 2 and TBI 3 in the fourth semester who received an A in basic writing subject in the third semester. Students were asked to write essays with free themes. After the researcher collected the data the researcher identification grammatical errors students’ essay writing. This research refers to Dulay’s theory. It was based on surface strategy taxonomy which was divide into four categories omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.
The conclusion of this research indicates that the result of the error analysis process showed that students committed error into four types: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Based on the finding data of this research, it found that one hundred fourteen errors in students’ essay writing. The highest frequency of errors happened in omission error, which consisted of 56 errors. Addition error, which consisted of 21 errors. Then, misformation error, which consisted of 35 errors. And the last, misordering error, which consisted of 3 errors.
