A Descriptive Study Of Students’ English Speaking Achievement At Eleventh Grade Of MA Ibadurrahman Tenggarong Seberang In Academic Year 2019-202

The speaking skill is important to be mastered. It because this skill plays an important role in communication. In personal experience by the researcher, many students have very limited time to practice speaking skill in English and this may affect to students’ speaking achievement. But in other case, there are many boarding schools which offer the English language program to the students for helping to mater it. Pondok Modern Ibadurrahman is the one of many boarding schools which does it. In this Islamic boarding school, the students have many time to practice the English skill, especially in speaking. Students should speakingin English at leats as long as two weeks in a month. Based on that issue, the researcher was interested in conducting a descriptive study of the students’ speaking achievement based on five sub-skills of speaking (fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension).
This research used descriptive-quantitative study that aimed to describe students’ English achievement at eleventh grade of MA Ibadurrahman Tenggarong Seberang which consists to 25 students. The main instrument of this research was oral test which consists to 10 questions. The technique of collecting data was speaking assessment. The data analysis technique used percentage formula. The rubric speaking assessment was from David P. Harris. The topic of oral test was about Islamic questions, dormitory or student’s activity and student’s learning style.
Based on analysis, the data shows that the students English speaking achievement is 70.88. It score was in 61-80 level. It was in “good” catagory level. Moreover, the percentage of students’ English speaking component show that the students have “Good” at vocabulary with 12 students as 48% of 25 students, have “Mediocre” in grammar with 14 students as 56%, have “Good” in fluency with 11students as 44%. In pronunciation, students have a balances among “Good” and “Mediocre” with 12 students as 48%. And in comprehension, the students have “Good” with 16 as 64% of 25 students. This achievement was describe how the students’ speaking achievement this school. It can be concluded that students’ English speaking achievement at eleventh grade in MA Ibadurrahman Tenggarong Seberang, academic year 2019/2020 was good.
