This research is under the guidance of Mr. Dr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd. as the first advisor, and Mrs. Dra. Sitti Hadijah, M. Pd. as the second advisor.
Learning methods and media are so influential in improving the quality of learning. The teacher should know well what methods and media are appropriate to use in activating students when learning speaking in the classroom. They should monitor every meeting and see what obstacles exist in the students during the learning process. Therefore, the teacher must be able to achieve the learning outcomes in accordance with the design that has been made so that everything runs optimally. The objectives of this research are to find out the methods and media of teaching speaking used by English teachers at MTs. and MA Al-Arsyadi in academic year 2021/2022.
The research design was descriptive qualitative. The instruments used in this research were observation sheet, interview guide, and documentation. The researcher collected the data during the pandemic of Covid-19. Face to face learning was carried in the school during the pandemic situation. So, it was quite easy for researcher to collect the data. The process of collecting data was by conducting offline interview. The subjects in this study were two English teachers in each Madrasah, they were MTs. and MA Al-Arsyadi. The researcher used qualitative data analysis techniques. The data was analyzed by using Miles, Huberman and Saldana.
There are two findings in this study. Firstly, there were four methods showed in the research by the teachers in teaching speaking, they were discussion, question and answer, describing picture and storytelling. The teacher at Mts. Al-Arsyadi uses all of these methods. Meanwhile, the teacher at MA Al-Arsyadi only use two methods, they are discussion and question and answer. All of these methods were chosen since helping students to be active in the classroom and develop their speaking skills during the learning process. Secondly, the media used were visual media in the form of whiteboard and handout. These media were chosen since it can be a support throughout learning process and can help students understand easily the material presented by the teachers.
