Students’ Difficulties In Speaking English Of The Eighth Grade At MTs. Darul Fata Samarinda In Academic Year Of 2023/2024

Thesis, Language Education Department, English Language Study Program, Education and Teacher Training Faculty, State Islamic University Of Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This research was supervised by Rostanti Toba, M.Pd, as the first advisor, and Anis Komariah, M.Pd as the second advisor. English has become a global language used in different social settings, such as workplaces or educational fields. Therefore, the Ministry of Education has decided to incorporate English as a subject to be taught in the schools to the students. However, in reality, many students struggle to master English, especially speaking, because they face difficulties. The students often stutter or stop talking when they do not know the word in English. They also lack of vocabulary mastery. These problems hinder the students from speaking English fluently. Thus, the researcher conducted a research with several purposes. The first is to discover the difficulties that the students faced in mastering the speaking skills. The second is to find out the strategies that the teacher used to help the students to overcome the difficulties. The data was collected during the in English class. The research used qualitative method. In addition, this research used Interview and observation as instruments. The data was collected through interviews with the students and teacher, and observation in the classroom during the teaching and learning process. Then, the data was analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s steps. There are data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion/verification. Triangulation was used to validate the data. The results of the research at MTs. Darul Fata Samarinda showed that the students faced difficulties in speaking English. The problems were linguistic problems and non-linguistic problems. The linguistic problems consisted of lack of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The non-linguistic problems consisted of fear in making mistakes, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. Meanwhile, the strategies used by the teacher to overcome these difficulties were pairs or group discussions, and repetition and memorization strategies.
