Undergraduate Thesis, English Language Study Program, Language Education Department, Education and Teacher Training Faculty, Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris State Islamic University Samarinda. This research is conducted under the supervision of Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the first supervisor and Mr. Muhammad Azwar A Paramma, M.Pd as the second supervisor. The background of this research is the success of a teacher in enhancing student activeness during English lessons through the use of rewards. Based on this background, the researcher is inspired in conducting the research about exploring the use of rewards by the teacher. The problems of this study are formulated into three, namely: (1) what kinds of reward are the teacher used to enhance students’ activeness? (2) how does the teacher implement the reward to enhance students’ activeness? and (3) how do the students’ respond when the teacher implements the reward? Therefore, the objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the types of rewards used by teachers to enhance student engagement in learning English, (2) to understand the implementation of these rewards, and (3) to determine students' responses to the use of rewards in English teaching. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of the study are English teachers at SMPN 36 Samarinda who use rewards in teaching and students of class 7C at SMPN 36 Samarinda. Data collection is conducted through observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The findings of this research are as follows: first, the types of rewards used by English teachers are verbal rewards, tangible rewards, and token rewards (points). Second, the implementation of these rewards involves posing questions to students, both orally and in written form, and rewarding students who can answer correctly. Additionally, teachers sometimes appreciate students who submit assignments the fastest by giving them star-shaped sticky notes with their names written on them. The sticky notes given by teachers are collected and stored by students to be used as additional grades at the end of the semester. Third, students' responses to the implementation of rewards are positive. Students find learning more enjoyable and motivating in learning English.
