Reading is not only about spelling words, but also about how we understand the meaning or how we get the information contained in the text. Reading is an activity that we do to get the information we need. The aims of this study were to find out the effectiveness of using skimming technique to improve reading comprehension by the eleven grade at SMA Nabil Husein Samarinda.
This study used a quantitative experiment with a quasi-experimental method. Both classes, each consisting of 30 students, were designated as the control class (XI MIPA 2) and the experimental class (XI MIPA 3). The instrument test was first carried out in Class XI MIPA 1 to find valid questions. From the results of the instrument test, 20 valid and reliable questions were taken. Meanwhile, the data analysis techniques applied in this study include normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis testing. Testing the data in this study using IBM SPSS 22.0.
The results obtained from this study indicate that the use of skimming techniques has an effect on the learning outcomes of class XI students at SMA Nabil Husein Samarinda. This is evidenced by the average learning outcomes obtained by the control class is 67.83 and the average learning outcomes obtained by the experimental class is 82.67. Meanwhile, the results obtained from the paired sample t-test were Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. This means that there is a significant difference between students' reading comprehension before and after using the skimming technique. It is also said that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) accepted. Based on the findings and discussion of the research, the researchers concluded that the skimming technique is effective in improving students' reading comprehension.
