This research aims to identify the types of speech act used by Elon Musk and analyze how the use of speech act can be related to English Learning and Teaching (ELT). This research explored the potential TED talk show as media for English language learning in the context of ELT. The result show that there are various type of speech act that used by Elon Musk at TED talk show. Such as Locutionary act, Illocutionary act and Perlocutionary act. Additionally, this research found that the use of TED talk show clips as media for English language learning can help improve language skill, the implication of this research is the important of using audio-visual media such as talk show as alternative in English language teaching, especially in the context of teaching pragmatics and developing students’ social skills. This research is a part of linguistic studies that emphasizes speech act in talk show, especially in Elon Mush TED talk show.
The research design was descriptive qualitative. In this research, the researcher focused in analyzing the types of speech act used by Elon Musk TED talk show. The research instruments were two instruments: first, the researcher itself as the main instrument to collect the data and second, observation sheets for counting the types of speech act used by Elon Musk TED talk show. The researcher collected the data by observing Elon Musk talk at TED talk show through video platform. The researcher analyzed the types of speech act used by Elon Musk TED talk show. The analysis data technique used analysis from Miles and Huberman.
The research findings showed that there were three types of speech act, there are Locutionary act, Illocutionary act, and Perlocutionary act. The researcher did the research by analysis speech act used Elon Musk at TED talk show, from the analysis found that Elon Musk used speech act 72 times, the types were Locutionary act (72), Illocutionary act (47), Perlocutionary act (15). The conclusion of this research showed in the types of speech act, Locutionary was mostly used by Elon Musk. Therefore, the most common type of speech act which was used by Elon Musk at TED talk show was Locutionary act. Not only in English language teaching, but speech act can also use in daily conversation, daily activity, and event in business way. We can implement speech acts to understand and knowing from different perspectives of meaning that people utterance.
