This research was supervised by Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the first Advisor and Mrs. Widya Noviana Noor, M.Pd as the second Advisor.
Speaking is one of the four skills in English. It is used as daily communication. By speaking students can express their ideas, thoughts orally. The relatively low ability of students to speak English will affect students' self- confidence, and will hinder students from speaking English at school. The purpose of this research was to measure the level of students speaking difficulties, what are the factors that influence students' difficulties in speaking English and to find out what strategies the teacher uses to overcome students' difficulties in speaking English. The researcher used a descriptive quantitative analysis method for the research data. This research involved 32 students at SMP Negeri 22 Samarinda in the academic year 2022/2023. This research instrument used questionnaires and interviews in data collection. Data analysis in this research used descriptive statistical test, validity and realiability test.
The results of this research revealed that students experienced difficulties in speaking English due to pronunciation 71.88%, grammar 66.88%, vocabulary 57.5%, and fluency 86.67%. The reason they experience this difficulty is the lack of understanding of vocabulary and proper and correct pronunciation. The factors that cause students to have difficulty speaking English are fear of making mistakes in pronunciation 62.5%, shyness 60.31%, anxiety when speaking English in front of the class 70%, lack of confidence 86.88%, and lack of motivation 87.19%. And the results of research with teacher interview instruments for strategies so that students can speak English easily, namely by discussing, having dialogue with friends, telling stories, and playing games.
