Listening is recognized as the key to "knowing" a language. Considering how important the listening skill is, students must learn, train and master listening in learning English as a foreign language comprehensively and the teachers should pay more attention to listening skill. The lack of teachers’ attention and low student encouragement in paying attention to listening leads to many students experience problems in listening comprehension. The aims of this study were to find out the listening comprehension problems experienced by the sixth semester students of English department at UIN Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda as well as the strategies that are utilized to overcome the listening comprehension problems.
This research is a descriptive research that utilized quantitative approach which means it is a research that aims to explain existing phenomena by using numbers to standardize individual or group characteristics. The subject of this research is all the sixth semester students of English department. In collecting data, researcher used valid and reliable questionnaires and then analyzed the data using descriptive statistic including frequency test and respondent achievement level (RAL).
Based on the results of RAL data analysis which have high category, the researcher found that the most common problems in listening comprehension experienced by the students are speech rate (82,3%) and poor audio quality (85%). In order to overcome the listening problems, the researcher found that students consistently attempt to guess the unknowing word with the word they understand (83,2%) and enjoy their listening activity (85%). This indicates that students would prefer to feel less anxious in order to listen better.
