Writing holds many roles in human life. Writing skills are needed in many aspects. People need to use written language when they deal with formal even non formal situation like when they are in the work places, schools, universities, and public institutions. Writing skills are needed in manyaspects. People need to use written language when they deal with formal even non formal situation.This research aims to improve the eighth grade students’ descriptive writing ability in SMP Negeri 6 Anggana.
The research was conducted in Class VIII . This study was an action research in nature. It was conducted in two cycles with three meetings in each cycle. The steps of the research were reconnaissance, planning, action and observation, and reflection. The subjects of the research were 20 students of VIII class. The data collected were in the form of qualitative data and supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained from observation, while the quantitative data were gained from tests. There were two tests in this research namely Pre-test and Post-test.
The result of the research showed that the use of Comic Strips gave significant improvement to the students’ descriptive writing ability. The result of the preliminary test showed that the maximum score was 74, minimum score was 42, the average score was 65.3 and the score of description was fair. The result of the post test showed that the maximum score was 82, minimum score was 60, the average score was 72.7 and the score of description was good.
