People can learn a great deal of information through reading that they cannot fully learn through other abilities like speaking, listening, or writing. One can assert that one
acquires knowledge or information through conversations with people and watching or listening to the radio or television. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or
not the fourth-semester English Department students at UINSI Samarinda had trouble understanding reading in narrative material.
Quantitative descriptive research was the method employed in this study. There are 71 students from the English Education Department at UIN Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda's fourth semester made up the study's sample. The students were given a test on narrative reading, which they were then asked to read and respond to using the questionnaire that was chosen as the research's instrument. The questionnaire, which was prepared using Google Form as the media and circulated it, was delivered to the students in order to gauge how well they understood the narrative text that was the center of this study.
The results indicated that among students in the fourth semester of the English student department, 17.3% had trouble locating factual information, 39.4% had trouble
locating the main idea, 29.1% had trouble locating vocabulary meanings, and 63.9% had trouble locating references. It is clear that the students at the English Education
Department's fourth semester at Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Islamic University of Samarinda struggle with reading comprehension.
