The TOEFL is a test conducted to measure a person's ability to master the English language. TOEFL covers three aspects: (1) listening comprehension; (2) structure and written expression; and (3) listening comprehension. In Indonesia, especially at UINSI Samarinda, the TOEFL test is required for English- and non- English-language students as a requirement in the thesis examination (Munaqasyah). However, this research is focused on the difficulties faced by students majoring in English in passing the TOEFL test.
The researcher use a descriptive quantitative method. The instrument used were questionnaires and observation. The sample in this study used 58 students of English department of UINSI Samarinda. The research data was collected by ask - ing students to answer questions in questionnaire consisting of 35 questions. The research data were analyzed using the presentation formula.
Based on the results of this study shown from the student questionnaire. This study concludes that the difficulties of English students at UINSI Samarinda are as follows. The difficulty in listening comprehension was 79%, the difficulty in reading comprehension was 66% and finally, the difficulty in understanding written structures and expressions was 71%. In this case it can be concluded that the most difficult test experienced by students in the TOEFL test was listening comprehension (79%).
